Coming to the JBC in April, Helter Smelter certain to mill plenty of laughs
Posted Mar 4, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC Entertainment - Canada's funniest mill worker is at it again with a brand new episode that keeps his audience rolling in the aisles.
Last seen as a Florida tourist, Lucien, the opinionated North Shore of New Brunswick mill worker returns to his roots where we find him ice smelt fishing in a colony of shanties on the Bay des Chaleur - still expounding on world issues, the fast changing pace of technology, national crises, love, sex, and politics and even ice fishing itself. He is forced to ponder even bigger issues when global warming cuts his frozen shanty town loose and turns it into a floating state separating from the rest of Canada, heading towards Quebec, infinity and beyond.
Helter Smelter is the fourth of the Lucien shows, a character created by Marshall Button, former artistic director of the Upper Canada Playhouse in Morrisburg, and currently artist in residence at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton, NB.
Lucien began innocently enough as a character played for friends at parties and to pass the time at various jobs in the paper mill at Dalhousie, NB during university days. In 1986, Lucien, A Labour of Love premiered. It was followed by Lucien's Labour Lost, Lucien Snowbird, and now Helter Smelter.
Button has played Lucien for audiences from five to 5,000 and his shows continue to be a hit on professional theatre stages across Canada with over 1500 performances and counting.
Marshall Button considers the best review he ever received came not from a critic, but someone in a show in NB. Apparently a woman in the audience was having difficulty hearing because the man sitting next to her was laughing so hard. The man told her "leave me alone, that's me I'm laughing at up there on the stage."
Lucien's Helter Smelter comes to the Joshua Bates Centre in Athens for one performance only on Saturday, April 10, with an 8 p.m. start. Tickets are $20 each, available from Kathryn, Burt Hudson Real Estate in Athens, 613-924-9141, Mary Rae, JB Kelly Insurance in Brockville, 613-345-3032. It's always fun to sit back, relax, laugh and "take a break" with Lucien.
