Legion Idol finale set to go

Posted Mar 4, 2010 By EMC News

EMC Events - Twenty-two singers were passed through the mill of the second week of Legion Idol at the Brockville Legion on Park Street and all will appear again at the Grand Finale on Friday, March 5, starting at 7 p.m.

The Idol changed its format somewhat this year. While 27 singers started, the only losses have been those who could not make it to the next Friday night.

"Every one of the singers has seemed to get better with each week," said Grace Elliott, the Idol producer who calls the shots on format. "We had 180 people in the MacDowell Auditorium for the second night and the crowd was very warmly entertained by great performances! Almost every genre of music is represented in the songs offered by Ultimate Sound who provide the tracks for the singers. And it's free! You cannot get a better deal for a Friday night out in Brockville than this."

The Branch is paying for the generous prizes ($500, $300 and $200) and the costs associated with production through the 50/50 draws they run and the bar, as well as the help of donors Sharon Clarke of Remax Realty, Mike Kalivas of Jon's Restaurant, Tincap Restaurant and Dominos Pizza, so the Idol needs lots of people out and enjoying themselves.

"It's a pleasure to see so many people from the public in the MacDowell Auditorium having a great evening," says Ray Gilroy, the president of Branch 96. "This week we had our own well-known crooner Dan MacQueen at half time to great applause, and the 50/50 this week was more than $220, so we are getting more comfortable with the turnout and the support. And we are going to try and sit 200 people for the finale.

"It's sure to be a great capstone to this year's series," concluded Gilroy, who is there every night and whose wife heads up the 50/50 team.

"The Grand Finale," sighed Elliott, "with the singers working on their combined three week scores, and the prizes at the end - it will be a night not to miss!"
