Blackhawks' inconsistent play continues with a win and a loss last week
Posted Mar 4, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC Sports - The Island City Blackhawks completed their four games in eight days with one win and three losses to show for it.
And so the inconsistent theme continues for the Blackhawks this season.
The latest team to pounce on the Blackhawks were the Flamingos from Morrisburg last Saturday night at the Youth Arena, outlasting their hosts 11-7.
It was definitely a game the Hawks played well enough to win, but numerous untimely breakdowns cost them again, including giving up two shorthanded goals to the Morrisburg team.
It was a game that saw the Blackhawks come back from two and three goal deficits but they just couldn't finish the job. The Flamingos arrived at the Youth Arena sporting new red jerseys and they jumped into a quick 2-0 lead minutes into the game.
The Hawks battled back to tie the game 2-2 before the first period ended.
The Flamingos quickly regained their two goal lead five minutes into the second period before the Hawks closed the gap to one again.
Two soft goals late in the period seemed to deflate the momentum the Hawks were gaining. They did however end the period trailing 6-4 heading into the third period.
Once again, the Hawks dug deep and battled back scoring early in the third to narrow the gap back to one, 6-5, the closest they would get in this game.
The Morrisburg gang held an insurmountable 9-5 lead but once again the Blackhawks narrowed the gap to 9-7 before a couple of costly mistakes put this game out of reach for the locals.
Management was very happy with the effort put forth by the team and felt the outcome was unfortunate, feeling they deserved better.
"The guys played well. They kept battling back but in the end we just fell a little short," said a team spokesperson.
The back breaker in this game was with the Hawks trailing 9-7 mid-way through the third and getting themselves a power play opportunity to close the gap on the visitors.
After a Flamingo defender iced the puck, the Hawks' defenceman went back to retrieve the black disc only to be stripped of it by six foot eight, Rob Casselman, who in turn circled in front of the Hawks' net out waiting netminder Bernie Greig, before depositing the biscuit into a yawning cage.
This goal definitely took the wind out of the sails of the Hawks. The Flamingos added one more to clinch this game.
The Velvet Fog, Rob Carter, led the Hawks offence on this night recording his fourth hat-trick of the season, while Mr. February, Travis Cauley, netted a pair. Rob McGonegal scored his first of the season and Dennis McFayden, playing with an extremely sore ankle, scored his 17th of the season.
PERKINS SCORES FIVE GOALS
The lone win the Blackhawks managed was last Tuesday night in Spencerville over the hard working Spencerville Hotel team where the Rubber Man, Jason Perkins, rippled the twine five times to lead the Hawks to a tough 8-5 win.
As hard as the Hawks played in this game, they just couldn't shake the Hotelers, led by their young goaltender, Cory Toye, who kept his team in this game with acrobatic saves. The Hawks finally got to the young goaltender, scoring three times in the last seven minutes to clinch the victory.
"I was surprised at how much jump our guys had tonight, this is our third game in four nights," management stated.
"Those guys (Spencerville Hotel) never quit, we couldn't pull away from them until late in the game. Their goalie played really well for them tonight. He gave his team a chance to win," continued management.
"It was nice to see Perky have a breakout game like that, especially against a quality goaltender. He's got a great shot, it was just a matter of time before he had a game like this, he was due."
Other than Perkin's five goals, the other Hawks to find the back of the net were Josh Brayton scoring twice and playing a solid two way game and the Foggy one, Carter, who also contributed with one goal, ending his mini two game goal-less slump.
The Blackhawks return to action Sunday taking their disappointing 9-12-2 win-loss record into Morrisburg for their first game of the year with the Chubbs.
Sporting a dismal 3-7-1 road record definitely makes Sunday's game with the Chubbs the ultimate challenge, especially against another quality opponent like them.
