EMC News - Even the freezing rain turning to snow couldn't dampen the excitement around the launch of a new logo design at the Brockville Public Library last Thursday, Jan. 12.

"We decided we wanted to have a new look," says Amanda Robinson, manager of Access Services. "We originally wanted to have a new logo as well in more areas for advertising and different applications."

The logo was created in-house by Kendra Lorimer with the help of a designer and tweaked by staff regarding the elements and colour.

"The logo is basically three open-ended boxes staggered over top of each other," said Robinson. "You can take each layer of the boxes off. If you take the third layer off, you can have a box that acts like a frame. Because the logo is basically a brush stroke, in the form of a square, we can use the brush strokes in all of our marketing and brochures we hand out. So that theme can be carried through everything that we produce and hand out to the public, including library cards. It's a really clean design and we really wanted to bring ourselves into the 21st Century."

The design represents the fact that the Brockville Public Library is open to helping the public.

As visitors walked into the library, they were met with the logo's colour combination of apple green, plum and teal coloured balloon, including the arch made specifically for this occasion.

"We are really, really pleased to show everybody the logo (with the colours) on the white background which is soothing, but very crisp and clean," said Robinson.

As the unveiling proceeded, little booklets - 'My Library Lists' giving individuals titled pages related to currently checked-out books, those books on hold, future books to check out and favourites - were given out to those present.

In addition to the launch of the new Brockville Public Library logo, new library cards were also available.

"The library card has now changed to a thick credit card which is actually a library card/key tag combo," said Robinson. "So when you do get the card you get the actual library card itself and a smaller replica that you can put on a keychain."

This enables people to use the keychain version when signing out a book, videos or whatever.

"Usually the replacement library card is $5, so some customers may wait until their membership renewal, some may upgrade to the new card combo or some may keep their old card," stated Robinson. "It's not mandatory that you get rid of their old card."

Besides the launch, children could pop a balloon to receive whatever gift was indicated on the piece of paper inside. Prizes ranged from bags of jelly beans to an extra movie take-out and a couple of dollars off fines.

Also, a jelly bean count was extended beyond the launch day to entice more involvement, as well as an opportunity to fill out a ballot in the 'Wish for What Patrons Would Like to See in the Library' contest for a draw on a Kobo Reader.

"We will post all the wishes and use them to gear our services towards what our customers want," said Robinson.

She then cut the celebratory cake with staff offering coffee or punch.

Unfortunately due to the weather conditions, event time change and people working, the Brockville Public Library board members and the City of Brockville personnel were unable to attend.

Exhibits on display for January at the Brockville Public Library's second floor consists of photography by the Every Angle Photographer's Association are hanging on the Adult Walls with Silence of the Snowstorm of Jeannine Duguay's crocheted snowflakes in the small showcase.
